To wrap up the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment funded RAAS project (2018-2020), we welcome you to join the below RAAS online event!

Speaker bios

Alain Siebert, Chief Economist & Master Planning, SESAR Joint Undertaking (a European Commission Agency)
Alain Siebert is responsible for all economic and master planning aspects of SESAR, the EU project geared at digitalising the Infrastructure supporting Aviation in Europe. In this position he is also responsible for organising and managing the involvement of the broader stakeholder community in making the right choices with regards to innovation and making sure it responds to EU policy priorities. He oversees the cooperation arrangements with EASA and National Authorities. Prior to joining the SESAR Joint Undertaking Alain started his career as a Management Trainee at Air France and later joined SAS Group as Executive Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer. He was later promoted Manager for Strategic Development under the responsibility of the Chief Operating Officer. Alain holds a MSc in Management and was educated at the Toulouse Business School and the London School of Economics.


Jere Laaksonen, CEO / VTT SenseWay
Jere entered into maritime business in 2008 as a Naval Architect. As a designer in world’s leading ship design company he got a perfect vantage point to learn all the secrets of ships and business around them. After few years working among ship design issues it was time for him to move along towards business oriented matters. Next few years he gained experience in Sales and Management duties that prepared him for the upcoming. In 2014 he was ready to step into big shoes of the Technical Product manager of propulsors. The company was Rolls-Royce and duties were a combination of technical and commercial roles. Time in Rolls-Royce made him tough business shark with strong understanding of technical issues. In 2017 his career permanently changed when he became responsible for the world’s first autonomous ferry -project. This happened in Rolls-Royce Ship Intelligence, which was established to revolutionize maritime business. He is still on this same journey developing and transforming technology into future proof solutions.

Pekka Yli-Paunu, Director, Automation Research / Cargotec & Kalmar
Pekka Yli-Paunu (Lic. Tech.) has a background from automation research in VTT and from factory automation/robotics projects. Pekka has started his career in Kalmar in 2003, and has worked in various automation R&D management roles. Currently, Pekka is focusing on automation applied research projects and building technology strategy and roadmap for coming years.


Eetu Pilli-Sihvola, Head of Analysis, Trials and R&D / Traficom
Eetu Pilli-Sihvola is the Head of Analysis, Trials and Research at the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). He has previously worked at the agency as an expert on automated driving and ITS, and he was involved in creating the first Finnish roadmap on automated mobility at the Ministry of Transport and Communications in 2015. Mr. Pilli-Sihvola has also worked as a research scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland on a variety of mobility topics.





Laura Ruotsalainen, Associate Professor / University of Helsinki
Dr. Laura Ruotsalainen is an Associate Professor of Spatiotemporal Data Analysis for Sustainability Science at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. Her current research interests include the development of computer vision, estimation and machine learning algorithms for creating and using accurate and reliable spatiotemporal data, namely navigation data, especially for the development of autonomous systems enabling sustainable smart cities.

Hannu Karvonen, Senior Scientist, Ecosystem Lead for Autonomous Systems / VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd
Hannu works as a Senior Scientist and Ecosystem Lead for Autonomous Systems. Currently, he is also the Coordinator for the Rethinking Autonomy and Safety (RAAS) ecosystem. Hannu has 17 years of work experience in human factors, usability, and user experience/interface/interaction research both from the academia and industry. In addition, during his career at VTT, he has been working in the development of various autonomous systems ranging from autonomous ship and metro systems to remotely operated industrial robots and container cranes. Hannu’s educational background includes a doctor’s degree in cognitive science and a master’s degree in economics.
